Congratulations to Ms. Rubalcava and Mr. Foster, who were recognized at the recent Fortissimo Awards, sponsored by the CMEA: SBS. Ms. Rubalcava, Vice Principal at Mira Mesa High School, received the 'Outstanding Administrator Award' for her consistent support of music education. Mr. Foster, Instrumental Music Director at Challenger Middle School, was recognized as the section's 'Outstanding Orchestra Educator'. Thank you, Ms. Rubalcava and Mr. Foster, for all you do for music education here in the Mira Mesa community. Thank you! Congratulations!
Shelby (viola) recently learned that she has earned a place in the 2019 California All-State String Orchestra. She and her peers in the ensemble will perform in February under the direction of Dr. Thomas Lowenheim, Director of Orchestras at Fresno State. Congratulations to this fine musician and wonderful student! Celebrate Success Happy 2019! Before we transition into the next phase of the year, please enjoy a few photos from recent events. Winter Concerts Our Mira Mesa High School Orchestras put on two evenings of concerts on December 13th and 14th. Please enjoy the following photos from the December 14th performance at Patrick Henry High School's PHAME Performing Arts Center. Book Drive At our 2018 Winter Concerts our Mira Mesa High School Orchestras had the opportunity to perform Eric Whitacre's setting of the iconic children's book Goodnight Moon (by Margaret Wise Brown). As part of the concert, we hosted a book drive to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. We were recently happy to have the opportunity to deliver nearly 700 books (!) to these two pillars of our community. Thank you to all who contributed to our book drive and thank you to these two incredible institutions! Choir Collaboration A quartet of musicians had the opportunity to perform alongside our Mira Mesa High School Madrigals at their Winter MultiCultural Choral Concert in December. Many thanks to our choral program for the invitation! Embrace Diversity

Rehearsal Preview | Divertimento in F, K. 138 (Mozart) A look inside a Monday afternoon rehearsal alongside our our Symphony Strings as we explore Mozart's Divertimento in F, K.138. Mozart completed the composition at age 15, in early January of 1772. Given this fact, perhaps it's appropriate similarly-aged musicians take a turn performing the piece. Giving Thanks Our Mira Mesa Orchestras have much to be thankful for this year. Here are a few recent activities and events for which we should give thanks. Groundbreaking | Music Building On Tuesday, November 13th, a few hundred music students were able to enjoy the official groundbreaking ceremony for our new music building! The new building will house our band, orchestra, and guard programs as we are certainly thrilled to see work commencing on this project. Let's cross our fingers and hope to be moved in for the start of the 2019-20 school year! Musical Opportunities Thanks in part to the VAPA Foundation, our students have the opportunity to study and explore a number of modern orchestral works, including compositions by Philip Glass, Max Richter, and Eric Whitacre. Pictured below, small chamber ensembles rehearsing Company, by pre-eminent American composer Philip Glass. The composition was originally a string quartet, so students have been divided into smaller ensembles to explore the work in its original setting. Celebrate Progress Our Symphony and Concert Orchestra held their annual Rehearse-a-Thon on November 12th. These students logged seven hours of rehearsal between the two ensembles and also enjoyed a lunch (facilitated by a great group of parent volunteers). Revisit the morning here and afternoon here. San Diego Symphony We were recently informed that our instrumental music program, in coordination with theSan Diego Symphony, were awarded a grant in the amount of $10,000 to provide wind coaching during the second semester to support our Mira Mesa Orchestras and Bands. Certainly, this is something to celebrate and be thankful for as we move through the Thanksgiving recess! We will be working with the San Diego Symphony in the coming weeks to structure a coaching schedule that best serves our students. Thinking of Others As part of our winter concert series we will be sponsoring a book drive to support our Rady Children's Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House-San Diego. Please consider donating new and/or used books. Collection bins are available at school and all items are welcome. Thank you! Informational & Business Items
